Franking account register
Keep every company’s franking account in one register
Track the franking account for every private company your practice looks after, in one register that sits with the client. Bring the history in from Excel once, then add each entry as it happens, so the balance is ready before the next dividend is declared.

What goes wrong today
The history is spread across tax returns
When the franking account lives in each year’s return, seeing the full history means going back through every return and pulling the figures out.
Each company has its own workbook
The spreadsheet sits in a folder somewhere, so the balance is only worked out at year end and nobody can see across the practice.
Last year’s figures quietly change
In a spreadsheet, anyone can edit a finished year, and the balance no longer matches the one in the return.
One register, start to finish
From the Excel history to a locked year
This is Bull Antics Pty Ltd, the trading company in a sample client group, working through its 2025/26 year. The figures are made up, but each step works the way the tool does.
Bring the history in from Excel in one go
Download the template, fill it in without changing the headings and upload it. Every earlier year lands in the register with its entries, and an entry dated in a prior year goes into that year.
Add each entry as it happens
Record tax paid, PAYG instalments, refunds, franked dividends received and dividends paid as they happen, each with a date, a type and a short description. The running balance updates with every line.
Lock the year when it’s done
Locking a year locks every entry before it, so the balance you put in the tax return can’t change underneath you. Link the dividend paperwork or the old spreadsheet, so the source sits with the register.
Keep the register with the work papers
Export the whole register as a PDF or Excel work paper, with every year’s entries and totals, straight to your computer or the client’s folder in your DMS.

Questions
What practices ask about franking account register
Can a company have more than one franking register?
No. Each company has one franking account register. If you try to create a second, AccountKit opens the existing one.
Can we import our existing franking account history?
Yes. Put the history into AccountKit’s Excel import template without changing the headings, then import it. An entry dated in an earlier year goes into that year.
What does locking a year do?
It locks every entry up to the end of that year. Later years stay open, so you can keep adding entries.
Does the register pull entries from Xero or QuickBooks?
No. You record entries in the register yourself, or import them from Excel.
Can we change the types of franking entry?
Yes. The list of entry types is set in practice settings, so it can match the categories your firm already uses.
How do I get the register out for the file?
Export it to Excel or PDF, to your computer or the client’s folder in your document management.
